Because I’ve seen firms who site past and ongoing projects, and others that don’t site anything at all… and I think the ones who reference projects are more legit. What is the word on the street of yahoo answers? lol.

It might be that state laws are different. I know that in Florida a lot of details on the transaction are publicly available (purchase price, mortgage amount, lender name, etc.) Brokers should not disclose information about the rate and terms to the public on the specific property. Only general guidelines. It is OK to acknowledge involvement without sharing what is not already publicly available.
I ask my clients permission to use their project for references and have them sign the authorization letter, just in case.
